about INSSYS

The Network was founded by Dr. Gary S. Hoffman (Chairman of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Vasculitis Care and Research) in 1991 while he served as the Head of The Vasculitis and Related Diseases Section at the National Institutes of Health. The Network infrastructure was moved to the Cleveland Clinic Foundation when he arrived in 1992. In the ensuing years the membership of The Network has grown from 15 to 55 institutions that are located throughout the world.

Each INSSYS member institution is represented by a principal investigator who is well known for their work in some aspect of inflammatory vascular disease. INSSYS has been responsible for a number of multi-center studies since its inception. The largest studies include: (1) an evaluation of the utility of methotrexate in the treatment of giant cell arteritis (21 institutions participated in this effort) and (2) an evaluation of the utility of Enbrel (sTNF receptor) in Wegener’s granulomatosis (8 center study).

Dr. John Stone serves as the Chairman (Johns Hopkins Vasculitis Center).
